Wonderful weather, exceptional speakers, informative topics, and fantastic Silent Auction items – this describes the 2017 ACEC Spring Conference held at Alderbrook Resort & Spa in Union, WA on May 18th – 20th. The theme of Key Staff Recruitment and Retention: Finding and Keeping Your Rock Star Employees was a pertinent topic and the speakers provided excellent strategies for firms. Kelly Hatfield from Enginuity Advantage started off the morning with a market snapshot of recruiting in the engineering field. A strategist, facilitator, and principal of JTG, Scott Johnston spoke on building skills through accelerated learning while Larry Ransom of The Synergy Network presented an energetic session on what is needed to retain and engage in today’s business environment. An interesting panel discussion on workplace wellness and benefits was moderated by Marc Strickland of Woodruff Sawyer & Co. and on Saturday morning, Emma Mayberry from 100% Talent gave an engaging talk on the Gender Equity Initiative happening now in Washington state. All in all, reviews were favourable and positive.
Friday evening included a beer tasting dinner featuring Fish Tale Brewery, an intriguing change from the usual wine tasting. The new Board of Directors was sworn in by former Chair Dwight Miller of Parametrix, with Chair Kathy Cox-Czosnyka, Chair-Elect Dan Campbell, Vice-Chairs Karen Doherty and Scott Roux, and Directors Crystal Donner, Roger Flint, Roger Smith, Larry Swartz, and Jim Thomson stepping into new and existing positions.
The Spring Conference was capped off with a Silent Auction on Friday evening, raising over $11,000 for ACEC’s Political Action Committee (ACEC PAC), the engineering industry’s primary tool for political engagement at the national level. Items included wine, beer, float plane and helicopter tours, chocolate, books, and more.
