The Marketing Engineer Seminar

THE MARKETING ENGINEER: Long-term success begins with the relationships you build today.

Tuesday, October 19, 2010 7:30 a.m. to Noon

The Coast Bellevue Hotel
625 116th Ave. NE, Bellevue

EVENT INFORMATION

This workshop focuses on specific techniques and strategies that engineers can use to develop business for their firms. These ideas have generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for engineering and architectural firms and are designed to benefit both the experienced and novice engineering marketer, especially those who can't find the time to market, really don't like "selling," or want to reach higher and get even more work. Here is what will be covered:

  • How to have marketing conversations when there aren't projects
  • What to say and do when face-to-face with a potential client
  • How to stay positive and effective in this economy
  • How to coach others to develop business
  • How to set up your firm now to win interviews later
  • What the 2010 survey with selection panel members revealed about effective business development activity before and after interviews.

The program is interactive, with useful handouts and ideas to implement immediately. During the session, you will have the opportunity to develop your own realistic plan for marketing.

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Karen Johnston, MA, Johnston Training Group, has been customizing skill-based training for engineers and architects for over 25 years in Business Development, Presentation Skills, and Workplace Communication. She understands the mind-set of those who “sell” their time and expertise. Her firm also coaches teams to win interviews, and she has extensively surveyed those who sit on selection panels about how prior contacts and relationships can make a difference. She taught Business Communications for two years in the University of Washington’s MBA Program, and she is a frequent presenter at national conferences.

Robertson Named ACEC/PAC Champion

Chris Robertson of Shannon & Wilson (2010-11 Chairman of the Board for ACEC Washington), has agreed to also serve as PAC Champion. Chris has been a tireless and effective advocate for legislative involvement and for the PACs for years and he’ll now fill that role in a formal capacity. The role of the PAC champion is primarily to encourage other members to believe and support the PAC. Chris is not a “do as I say” guy, he has been a member of the ACEC/PAC Chairmans Club ($2500) for the last two years, and was a long time Millenium Club ($1000) contributor before that.

The American Council of Engineering Companies Political Action Committee (ACEC/PAC) is the engineering industry’s preeminent political action committee. The sole purpose of ACEC/PAC is to elect candidates to the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate who support policies and legislation favorable to the engineering industry. ACEC/PAC supports candidates on a bipartisan basis, and is overseen by a committee of PAC Champions representing the state ACEC organizations.

The PAC Champions design and implement a plan to help state Councils achieve their PAC goals through relatively small contributions ($100 per person) from a large pool of donors. Here in Washington, one-half of our total contributions have always come from a handful of major contributors. Chris would like to great reduce that ratio by attracting more contributions from more people, while still encouraging more members to become major donors.

SAME Meet the Chiefs Meeting

Over 200 engineering consultants registered for the annual ACEC Washington/SAME Seattle Post “Meet the Chiefs” on June 22 in Bellevue, one of the largest industry meetings for the organizations. The meeting began with an hour of networking, with consultants connecting with military personnel and industry peers.

Chiefs from around the Northwest and Alaska presented the status of current and future projects in their district. Those presenting were:

Colonel Reinhard Koenig, District Commander, USACE Alaska District; Lt. Colonel Stephen Capps, USACE Portland District; Jerry Johnson, Shore Infrastructure Logistics Center, USCG; Dana Knudson, USACE Walla Walla District; Lt. Colonel Robert Hodgman, Washington Army National Guard; Colonel Anthony Wright, USACE, Seattle District; Commander Glenn Shepard, NAVFAC Northwest.

Much like last year, a common need for the majority of the districts is infrastructure maintenance and upgrades, not necessarily new construction. In many hydroelectric systems, upgrades are taking place, or scheduled, to improve efficiencies and capacity to the power grid.

On the military construction side, area bases are continuing with modernization and fulfilling the needs for the joint bases in the region. Other work includes formally used defense sites (FUDS), preparation for the future arrival of the tanker plane, and area Superfund sites.

If you missed the meeting, presentations are available here.
